And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." ~Matthew 28:18-20 |

Make Disciples |
"Make disciples" is the mandate of the Master, states Walt Henrichsen. We may ignore it, but we cannot evade it. Our risen Christ left this legacy—the magna charta of the church. He provided both the model and the method. His life—and death—recast the lives of men. He demonstrated that you have not done anything until you have changed the lives of men. [Walter Henrichsen] |

Disciple |
Greek= mathetés (  );
from the root, math—indicating
thought accompanied by endeavor. It literally
means, a " learner", in
contrast to a " teacher;" hence
it denotes one who follows one's teaching;
a pupil, a student, a disciple. [Vines] |

Follower: |
And He [Jesus] said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men. ~Matthew 4:19 |

Lover: |
"By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." ~John 13:35 |

Fruitful: |
"By this is My Father glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples. ~John 15:8 |

Glory |
An age-old question has been repeatably asked—and answered—down through the centuries: What is the chief end of man? To glorify God. |
What is glory? Simply stated, an object may be said to exude “glory” when it functions exactly as it was designed to function, bringing pleasure and joy to the designer and to those in its presence. It fullfills that purpose for which it was created. However, if that object is misused or abused, thereby marring its intended purpose and potential, it literally "falls from glory." From a biblical perspective we learn that anything short of glory is "sin." The Apostle Paul reminds us that: "As it is written, 'There is none righteous, not even one;'...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." [Romans 3:10,23] |
A lamp
is designed to give off light when an on/off
switch is triggered causing the bulb to light
up. When it goes according to plan, it brings
glory to the manufacturer of the lamp.
When it does not produce light, there is
a tendency to curse the darkness. |
A cell phone is designed as a communication device. No matter how many additional features are added to these electronic gadgets, using it as a hammer to pound on nails is not a “ringtone” suggested by the manufacturer. Granted, hammering nails may have limited success, but only to its eventual demise. Lack of understanding and skill will only lend itself to damage and diminishing use of its true purpose. Therefore, it’s best for cell phones to be in the possession of the skilled and knowlegeable. A cell phone exudes “glory” only when it functions precisely as it was designed. |
Our lives,
left in our own hands, can be a daunting
journey in attempting to work through day-to-day
living. Without the Master's hands directing,
encouraging, forgiving, instructing, imparting
peace and eternal purpose, we end up damaged
goods at best, and hopelessly lost at worst. But alas! There is good news! There is hope! The Bible proclaims this wonderful truth: "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." [Romans 6:23] |
God has
not given up on us. "Thanks be to God
through Jesus Christ our Lord," we are
able to "personally" become the answer to
that age-old question at hand: what is
the chief end of man? Know this deep
within your heart: God is most glorified
in us when we lovingly and joyfully express
His image and likeness. [JCF] |
Purpose |
"It is imperitive that we recognize the deepest gnawing within the human breast is for adequate answers to the purpose and meaning of life." (C.A. Jones) Just as every mother is disappointed if her child never asks the question "why," so God must be concerned when men attempt to stifle the built-in philosophical urge which He has put within every breast. Destroy his sense of destiny and purpose and he soon becomes nothing more than a beast. Therefore, it is imperative that we develop a truly God-centered philosophy of life—this means we must see all things as properly related to God and His ultimate intention. [DeVern Fromke] |
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. ~Ephesians 1:3-6 |
God's desire, from His Father-heart, is to have a vast family of sons and daughters fashioned after His own precious Son, Jesus. He longs to have unhindered fellowship with us, to share His eternal plans with us, and to actively involve us in working out those plans with Him. Oh, the joy that He knows it will bring to you—and to Him! |
"Unhindered" in our relationship with Father-God means for us to "grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ." It means that we must become more like Him. Our goals and desires must be transformed by His goals and desires. Getting to know Him as "He" desires us to know Him. Learning to know that fellowship with Him is not just a morning devotion, or asking help for a pressing need. While it may include those things, it is grasping the lifestyle of "praying without ceasing." Always communicating with the Father, and always having your heart pure and in tune to hear His "still, small voice." |
Jesus said, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." [Matthew 5:8] In other words, you will be able to "see" Him in the midst of any situation, and find peace; you will know of His continual presence; you will awake with Him on your mind—and upon your lips; you will know that He will never leave you, or forsake you; you will be able to share the deepest things upon your heart with Him, without any fear; you will enjoy hope for the future because His eternalness has totally engulfed your very being. He "is" life. He is "your" life. And living life to the fullest, with Him, is His plan. [JCF] |
Maturity |
The Apostle John, in his First Epistle, reveals three levels of spiritual growth, identifying the qualifying characteristics for each: |
I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for His name's sake. I am writing to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I have written to you, children, because you know the Father. I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one. ~1 John 2:12-14 |
Children |
•Your sins are forgiven
•You know the Father |
Young Men |
•You are strong
•The word of God abides in you
•You have overcome the evil one |
Fathers |
•You know Him who has been from the beginning |
The two
primary characteristics that a little child
must acquire early in life are: attentiveness
and obedience. Attentiveness—hearing
what needs to be heard; obedience—doing
what needs to be done. These are the foundation
stones for which all other character-blocks
will be built upon. Without attentiveness,
misdirection and disobedience become commonplace,
enjoined by an endless, frustrating
struggle for the parents. Without obedience,
rebellion roots itself deeply within the
heart of the child, and hope tends to lose
out to heartache. Seeds of disintegration
scattered throughout childhood produce a
multitude of casualties in adult life that
could have been avoided. That being said,
from a spiritual perspective, these two character
traits are also paramount in our walk with
the Lord. Note how the Apostle Peter framed
the importance of these qualities: |
Therefore, gird your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, "You shall be holy, for I am holy." ~1 Peter 1:13-16 |
In the
same light, the two defining marks of "children"
in which the Apostle John identifies as spiritual
growth are absolutely "on-the-ground" foundational
truths. These characteristics are in no way
temporal—for one to grow
out of; but fundamental—for
one to grow up on. It cannot be stated any
stronger than that "knowing who your father
is," and "knowing that your sins are forgiven
you," are bedrock essentials in order
to promote further spiritual growth. Not
grasping either of these truths can only
breed doubt, distrust, and fear. |
As a father,
I thoroughly enjoyed my children when they
were babies. Most mealtimes were fun, especially
coming up with creative ways of feeding my
little ones, getting as many peas "in
the mouth" as were flying in space!
But I am certainly glad that they "caught
on" and learned how to feed themselves.
Their dependence upon me was becoming less
necessary; and our "creative" mealtimes
eventually changed into more meaningful exchanges
with one another. They were becoming more
independent in their thoughts and actions. |
Growing
up does not mean that you become totally
independent though. It was with that false
idea that the serpent tempted Eve in the
Garden. The notion that knowledge could make
her independent and, thereby, removing any
need she had for God, seemed pretty tempting.
Why, she could even become her own god. That
is not the independence God is looking for. |
He created us for Himself, and designed us to totally live by His life. It is therefore our Father's desire that we grow up to a place where we actually become "independently dependent upon Him." As we do, we will not have to totally rely upon others for our spiritual nourishment. We will be able to take up our own "spiritual knife and fork" and adequately feed ourselves. Paul commended the Thessalonians for arriving at this disposition when he said: "Now as to the love of the brethren, you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another." [1 Thessalonians 4:9] |
It's not that we get to a place where we don't ever need anybody again. That idea flies into the face of Paul's exhortation: "Therefore encourage one another, and build up one another, just as you also are doing." [1 Thessalonians 5:11] |
As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves, and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of man, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him, who is the head, even Christ, from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by that which every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love. ~Ephesians 4:14-16 |
There should come a time in our lives, though, when we begin verifying other people's teachings and ideas concerning spiritual things. Not that we distrust them in any way. But that we should become "personally accountable" before God for the truths that we need to know, to understand, and to believe. We are exhorted numerous times in Scripture to allow God's Word to be our final Source in apprehending the truth for ourselves. Truth that now becomes something "I believe," not just something we quote that "someone else" believes. |
The Thessalonian Church was an amazing group of believers: growing, maturing, loving and encouraging each other. Paul commended them often for their passion for the Lord, as we have previously seen. And yet, Paul singled out an even more amazing group, invoking kudos upon the Bereans by stating: "Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily, to see whether these things were so." [Acts 17:11] |
As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude. See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, acording to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ. For in Him all the fulness of Deity dwells in bodily form, and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority. ~Colossians 2:6-10 |
Jesus instructed
His followers by saying: "If you abide
in My word, then you are truly disciples
of Mine; and you shall know the truth, and
the truth shall make you free." And
shortly before
the Lord Jesus went to the cross on our behalf
He spoke these final words to His Father: "But
now I come to Thee; and these things I speak
in the world, that they may have My joy made
full in themselves. I have given them Thy
word; and the world has hated them, because
they are not of the world, even as I am not
of the world. Sanctify them in the truth;
Thy word is truth." [John
8:31,32; 17:13,14,17] He is worthy! [JCF] |
The Book
of Hebrews begins with these words: "God,
after He spoke long ago to the fathers in
the prophets in many portions and in many
ways," (Heb. 1:1). Those "many
portions and ways" are understood to
be the "Revelation
of God," and are commonly categorized
in two areas: 1) General Revelation:
Creation, Conscience, Providence, Preservation;
and 2) Special Revelation: Jesus
Christ, Holy Spirit, The Bible. |
Getting a grasp of God's Word is absolutely essential in getting to know Him intimately, as well as in getting to know His ways and His will for our lives. In 2 Timothy 3:16 & 17, God gives us a clear, four-fold outline in how to pursue and understand the genetics of Scripture: |
The
Profit Of God's Word (v.16) |
All
Scripture is inspired by God and profitable
for teaching, for reproof, for correction,
for training in righteousness; |
Teaching |
•Shows you the path to walk on
•Wisdom in the basic principles of life concerning God's will and ways |
Reproof |
•Shows you where you have gotten off the path
•Reveals errors and violation of life principles |
Correction |
•Shows you how to get back on the path
•Steps in correcting violations by reconstructing your thinking and direction |
Training In Righteousness |
•Shows you how to stay on the path
•Further guidance in Scripture concerning
discipline and perseverance in Godliness
The Purpose Of God's
Word (v.17) |
...that the man of God may
be adequate, equipped for every good work. |
Adequate (Being) |
•Colossians 2:10: "In Him we have been made complete..."
•Ephesians 4:12-16: Expressed maturity of the Body of Christ |
Equipped (Doing) |
•Ephesians 6:10-18: Fully dressed in the armor of God
•2 Timothy 2:15: "...handling accurately the word of truth." |
We are exhorted in 2 Peter 3:18 to "...grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ." In 1 Peter 2:2, we are encouraged to have that same overwhelming disposition in craving the Word as a newborn babe has in longing for nourishment! |
The following
are five key ways to grasp God's Word. The
first two are necessary for gaining an overall
view, like seeing a large city from an airplane
window before landing. The next two ways
help you to discover and retain the details
of God's truths, like locating the street
where you live and finding your home filled
with many enjoyable possessions. The last
way is necessary in knowing how to apply
God's truths in your life for His glory,
like learning how to operate different tools
and gadgets within your home correctly. |
The
Procurment Of God's Word (1 Peter 2:2) |
Like
newborn babes, long for the pure milk of
the word, that by it you may grow in respect
to salvation. |
Hearing |
•Least comprehensible; remember only 5-10% after 24 hours
•Romans 10:17: Faith comes by hearing...the Word of God
•Mark 4:23,24: He who has ears to hear, let him hear |
Reading |
•Gain overall picture; don't stay here, press on
•Revelation 1:3: One who reads is blessed
•1 Timothy 4:13: Public reading of the Word |
Studying |
•To read in detail and to consider attentively, especially with intent on learning
•2 Timothy 2:15: Study, be diligent, handling accurately the word of truth
•Acts 17:11: Examine the Scriptures daily
•Ezra 7:10: Set your heart to study the law...to practice it...to teach it |
Memorizing |
•Learning each verse letter-word-perfect in order to have instant recall
•Psalm 119:11: To keep your way pure, and to keep from sinning
•Proverbs 7:1-3: Treasure God's word within you |
Meditating |
•To
reflect on, or ponder over; rumination,
chew cud; view facets as in a diamond
•Psalm 1:2,3: Meditation brings resources for life, health,
wisdom, wealth
•Joshua 1:8: Meditate day and night; results—prospering in all things |
Getting
started in studying the Bible can be an overwhelming
experience. With so many books and study
guides and Bible translations and sermons
and videos and...wheh! Help! It does not
have to be like that. You can get started
with just a few essentials. |
Keep in mind, this is "your own personal, intimate" study of God's Word. And because He is so committed to your arriving at the truth, and discovering wonderful things about Him, He has given you His Holy Spirit to guide you through it, and to have fellowship with you as you study. He's really looking forward to it! |
The following "essential
equipment" ought to be obtained as you
embark upon your spiritual journey: |
•A literal
translation of the Bible;
•A concordance that corresponds
with your Bible translation;
•A looseleaf
notebook;
•Colored marking devices;
•Bible dictionary |
Further
details of these five essentials are given
below. [JCF] |
1. Bible |
While there are scores of modern Bible versions on the market today, if you are interested in serious study of the Bible, including grammar and vocabulary, you will want a more literal translation, such as the New King James, New American Standard, English Standard Version, or the Holman Christian Standard Bible. It is always good to compare several translations, especially for passages that are difficult to understand. Paraphrases and freer translations (not necessarily less accurate), should be used in reading large blocks of Scripture or for casual reading, but not for word-for-word studies. |
Once you
have decided upon a translation, you may want
to consider selecting a Bible with large
print and/or wide margins to more easily
record your own brief notes, outlines, underlining,
and highlighting. (Note: The heavier the
paper the better; onion-skin type paper tears
easily). |
Although you may have several Bibles that you use, the Bible that you select for serious study should now become your main study Bible! |
New King James Version (NKJV) |
The New King James was released in 1982, and involved 119 contributors. It updates the vocabulary and grammar of the King James Version, while preserving the classic style and beauty. Although it uses the same Hebrew and Greek texts as the original, it indicates where other manuscripts differ. Published by Thomas Nelson. |
New American Standard Bible (NASB) |
Completed in 1971, the New American Standard Bible was produced by 54 conservative Protestant scholars sponsored by the Lockman Foundation. This version is very literal in vocabulary and word order. It often is preferred by those who want an English version that reflects the grammar of the original. An Update was published in 1995 which seeks to use more modern English while preserving the literal nature of the translation. (The New Inductive Study Bible has great spacing and wide margins for note-taking) |
English Standard Version (ESV) |
The English Standard Version is an "essentially new literal translation" which follows the tradition of the King James, American Standard Version, and Revised Standard Version. Published in 2001 by Crossway, it was developed by a translation team of more than 100 scholars, with the goal of being very accurate (word for word), and yet very readable. |
Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB) |
The Holman Christian Standard Bible is another new word-for-word translation that strives to be both literally accurate and readable. It is not as literal as the NASB or ESV, but is more so than the NIV. The HCSB, published by Broadman & Holman in 2003, is the product of nearly 100 scholars. |
King James Version (KJV) |
The King James Version of the Bible probably is the most beautiful, elegant, literary English translation that will ever be produced. In fact, it contributed a great deal to the formation of the English language. Modern translations usually lack the poetry of the King James because modern biblical scholars are more scientists than artists. |
Nevertheless, there are two major problems with the King James Version. First of all, when it was translated in 1611, there were relatively few Hebrew and Greek manuscripts available and they tended to be recent and less accurate. In the nearly 400 years since then literally thousands more manuscripts have been discovered, ranging from small portions to complete copies of the Old or New Testaments. Many of these are very early and more accurate. |
Secondly, the English in the King James Version is not at all the same language spoken today. Both the vocabulary and grammar have changed considerably. As a result, a reader often must retranslate the King James into modern English in his or her mind. For many people, especially children, reading the King James Version is like reading a foreign language. |
2. Concordance |
A Bible concordance is an alphabetical listing of all the words found in the biblical text. Each list usually contains a reference and a brief phrase of each of the verses in which that particular word is found. Some concordances also use a numbering system for each word to identify whether it came from the Hebrew or Greek text. This number correlates with the dictionary section and offers information pertaining to parts of speech and a brief definition. |

3. Looseleaf Notebook |
The purpose of personal Bible study is to transform your life, and as a result, transform your world. What makes one person a better Bible student than another? He can see more, that's all. The same truth is available to both of them in the text. And yet, learning to do it properly is a process that can't happen overnight. |
Therefore, developing a habit of quantity reading, plus, acquiring a variety of observational skills will greatly enhance the ability for one to see and to grasp things more clearly. (see the Observation Chart below) |
Keeping track of your own personal observations is one of those important skills. Taking notes, journaling your thoughts, organizing your studies in notebook form can be quite helpful and rewarding. A three-ring binder large enough to hold letter-size and notebook paper is recommended. You should also acquire a set of tabs (or two) in order to organize your studies by topics and/or books of the Bible. |
4. Colored
Pens & Hilighters |
One of the best ways to help you observe the truths and concepts within the biblical text is to make identifying marks in, around, under, and over words and phrases using colored pens, pencils, and hilighting markers. There are a variety of ways to do this. To help you get started, or to expand upon your present system, locate the Bible Marking Chart. There is also an example page available demonstrating how this is done ( 1 Thessalonians Example). |

Books, for the most part, are simply teachings, training, or sermons in print form. Someone once said in regard to the variety of books available today that "...good books are often the enemy of the best!" While there is a place for light reading, novels, etc., some books may "steal" our time from investing in that which is eternal. Don't sacrifice your time in reading only the "good" books. Search for books and materials that will help you to know Jesus more intimately, and to grow in your Christian life. |

There are
six categories below that list a few of
these time-tested books by authors who have
walked with God: |

The Lost Art Of Disciple Making
Author: Leroy Eims
ISBN: 031037281X |
"Every believer in Jesus Christ deserves the opportunity of personal nurture and development." says LeRoy Eims. But all too often the opportunity isn't there. We neglect the young Christian in our whirl of programs, church services, and fellowship groups. And we neglect to raise up workers and leaders who can disciple young believers into mature and fruitful Christians. In simple, practical, and biblical terms, LeRoy Eims revives the lost art of disciple making. He explains: - How the early church discipled new Christians - How to meet the basic needs of a growing Christian - How to spot and train potential workers - How to develop mature, godly leaders "True growth takes time and tears and love and patience," Eims states. There is no instant maturity. This book examines the growth process in the life of a Christian and considers what nurture and guidance it takes to develop spiritually qualified workers in the church. |

Protestant Biblical Interpretation
Author: Bernard Ramm
ISBN: 0801020832 |
Since its publication in 1950, Protestant Biblical Interpretation has been a standard introduction to hermeneutics in evangelical colleges and seminaries.
Hermeneutics, writes the author, is the science and art of Biblical interpretation. As such, it forms one of the most important members of the theological sciences. This is especially true for conservative Protestantism, which looks on the Bible as the only authoritative voice of God to man. |
After surveying the history of biblical interpretation, the author devotes seventy pages to explicating the Protestant system of hermeneutics. He then discusses the doctrinal, devotional, and practical uses of the Bible. Following a chapter on the hermeneutical dimension of the problem of biblical inerrancy and secular science, he concludes with chapters on the interpretation of types, prophecy, and parables.

New Evidence That Demands A Verdict
Author: Josh McDowell
ISBN: 0785242198 |
Bestselling author and Christian apologist Josh McDowell hopes The New Evidence That Demands A Verdict will further document historical evidence of the Christian faith. As such, it is a straightforward compilation of notes prepared for his lecture series, "Christianity: Hoax or History?" The entire book (over 750 pages) is laid out in outline form, which makes it easier for researchers, scholars, and students to access. As a result, this is not reflective fireside reading. Rather, it is a tool for locating supporting "evidence" whenever the need arises.
Part I addresses the trustworthiness of the Bible; Part II offers historical evidence and supporting attestations for Jesus' claim to God; Part III addresses "radical Christian criticism" of the Bible; Part IV is devoted to quelling the voice of numerous skeptics, including "a defense for the existence of miracles" and "answers to divergent worldview." |

The Case For Christ
Author: Lee Strobel
ISBN: 0310209307 |
The Case for Christ records Lee Strobel's attempt to "determine if there's credible evidence that Jesus of Nazareth really is the Son of God." The book consists primarily of interviews between Strobel (a former legal editor at the Chicago Tribune) and biblical scholars such as Bruce Metzger. Each interview is based on a simple question, concerning historical evidence (for example, "Can the Biographies of Jesus Be Trusted?"), scientific evidence, ("Does Archaeology Confirm or Contradict Jesus' Biographies?"), and "psychiatric evidence" ("Was Jesus Crazy When He Claimed to Be the Son of God?"). Together, these interviews compose a case brief defending Jesus' divinity, and urging readers to reach a verdict of their own. |

Knowing God
Author: J. I. Packer
ISBN: 083081650X |
A lifelong pursuit of knowing God should embody the Christian's existence. According to eminent theologian J.I. Packer, however, Christians have become enchanted by modern skepticism and have joined the "gigantic conspiracy of misdirection" by failing to put first things first. Knowing God aims to redirect our attention to the simple, deep truth that to know God is to love His Word. What began as a number of consecutive articles angled for "honest, no-nonsense readers who were fed up with facile Christian verbiage" in 1973, Knowing God has become a contemporary classic by creating "small studies out of great subjects." Each chapter is so specific in focus that each succeeding chapter's theology seems to rival the next, until one's mind is so expanded that one's entire view of God has changed. |

The Pleasures Of God
Author: John Piper
ISBN: 0785252029 |
You don't truly know someone until you know what makes him happy. Our pleasure is the measure of our character. So it is with God. We can only know the greatness of His glory, if we know what makes Him glad. Therefore we must understand "the pleasures of God." |
Beginning where the foundational truth of Desiring God left off, that "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him," this expanded rerelease of another classic by John Piper will further explore a life-changing essential— "We will be most satisfied in God when we know why God himself is most satisfied in God." Fully understanding the joy of God will draw the reader into an encounter with His overflowing, self-replenishing, all-encompassing grace—the source of living water that all Christians desire to drink. The Pleasures of God will again put God at the center of Creation and leave the reader very satisfied in Him.

Heaven
Author: Randy Alcorn
ISBN: 0785252029 |
According to Alcorn (The Treasure Principle; Deadline; Safely Home), the subject of heaven rates as one of the least accurately discussed subjects in the whole of Christendom. Even seminarians fail to give appropriate time and attention to heaven as described throughout the Bible because other themes take pre-eminence both chronologically and preferentially. Alcorn is likewise astounded that the majority of Christians who do take time to consider heaven often possess faulty, nonbiblical assumptions, one of the most common being the misconception of heaven as a place of unending church services. The author has spent years studying what the Bible says about heaven, and in this compelling and comprehensive resource, he offers every conceivable question about heaven, or the "New Earth," as a Christian believer's ultimate destination. |

More Than A Carpenter
Author: Josh McDowell
ISBN: 0842345523 |
Josh McDowell's timeless examination of the true nature of Christ and his impact on our lives is one of the best-selling Christian books ever (more than ten million copies in print worldwide!). Written by a former skeptic of Christianity, it is a hard-hitting book for those who doubt Jesus' deity and his purpose. |
Since its release, More Than a Carpenter has been challenging readers to ask the question, "Who is Jesus?" Author and renowned speaker Josh McDowell acknowledges that while the topic of God is widely accepted, the name of Jesus often causes irritation. "Why don't the names of Buddha, Mohammed, Confucius offend people? The reason is that these others didn't claim to be God, but Jesus did." By addressing questions about scientific and historical evidence, the validity of the Bible, and proofs of the resurrection, McDowell helps the reader come to an informed and intelligent decision about whether Jesus was a liar, a lunatic, or the Lord. |

ISBN: 1604593199 |

The Pursuit of God: This book is a modest attempt to aid God's hungry children so to find Him. Nothing here is new except in the sense that it is a discovery which my own heart has made of spiritual realities most delightful and wonderful to me. Tozer |

Basic Christianity
Author: R. W. Stott
ISBN: 0830834036 |
Who is Jesus? "If Jesus was not God in human flesh, Christianity is exploded," writes John Stott. "We are left with just another religion with some beautiful ideas and noble ethics; its unique distinction has gone." If Jesus is not who He said He was, and if He did not do what he said He had come to do, the whole superstructure of Christianity crumbles in ruins to the ground. Is it plausible that Jesus was truly divine? And what might this mean for us?
John Stott's clear, classic statement examines the historical facts on which Christianity stands. Here is a sound, sensible guide for all who seek an intellectually satisfying explanation of the Christian faith. |

Ultimate Intention
Author: DeVern Fromke

With an emphasis on the importance of God-centeredness
for the normal Christian life, the author begins with an unfolding of God’s eternal purpose which He purposed for Himself in eternity past. A God-centered view of reality is the only environment that can nurture proper spiritual growth. My Utmost For His Highest (Revised Edition)
Author: Oswald Chambers
ISBN: 0929239571 |
Oswald Chambers, a Scotsman who converted to Christianity in his teens under the ministry of Charles Spurgeon, has been affecting Christians with his devotional words since My Utmost for His Highest was first published in 1935. This acknowledged classic contains 365 daily readings that take heady doctrine and make it practical, realistic, and intensely personal. With humor and humility, Chambers speaks plainly to the common man struggling with devotion to Christ in daily living. Worldly cares and self-serving desires begin to lose their appeal as Chambers aides the reader in transforming his mind by viewing life through the instruction of God's Word. Richard Halverson, former chaplain of the United States Senate, attests to this: "no book except the Bible has influenced my walk with Christ at such deep maturing levels." This is Chambers's chief desire, directing the reader to "shut out every other consideration and keep yourself before God for this one thing only—My Utmost for His Highest—determined to be absolutely and entirely for Him and for Him alone."

John Calvin
Author: Herman Selderhuis
ISBN: 0830829210 |
"This is simply one of the best biographies of Calvin I have seen. Selderhuis has managed admirably to combine keen academic insight with a clear, engaging writing style and many delicious details. For all who are curious about Calvin, Selderhuis's John Calvin: A Pilgrim's Life is the place to begin."
"Five hundred years after the birth of John Calvin, the reformer of Geneva continues to loom large as one of the most formative figures in Christian history, and one of the most difficult to know up close and personal. Herman Selderhuis presents here a fresh new biography based on a careful reading of Calvin's letters and other sources. Calvin emerges as neither hero nor villain, but rather as a flawed and forgiven pilgrim who never lost sight of his final destination and inspired many others along the way. A wonderful introduction to a great teacher of the church!"—Timothy George, dean, Beeson Divinity School, Samford University |

Fanny Crosby
Author: Fanny Crosby
ISBN: 1598562819 |
Frances Jane Crosby (1820-1915), usually known as Fanny Crosby, was an American lyricist best known for her Protestant Christian hymns. She was one of the most prolific hymnists in history, writing over 8,000 hymns, despite being blind from shortly after birth. Also known for her preaching and speaking, during her lifetime Fanny Crosby was one of the best known women in the United States. |
To this day the vast majority of American hymnals contain her work. Some of her best known songs include "Blessed Assurance," "Jesus Is Tenderly Calling You Home," "Praise Him, Praise Him," and "To God Be the Glory." Since some publishers were hesitant to have so many hymns by one person in their hymnals, Crosby used nearly 100 different pseudonyms during her career. |

Long unavailable, this is the story (originally published in 1906 as Memories of Eighty Years) of a remarkable life, told by Miss Crosby herself. |

ISBN: 0764201565 |
CHARLES G. FINNEY (1792-1875) is recognized as the most effective evangelist of the 19th century. It is estimated that more than half a million people were converted to Christ through his evangelistic ministry. After becoming a lawyer he carefully explored the claims of Christ and was powerfully converted in 1821. An avid student of the Bible, he soon engaged in preaching and teaching throughout many eastern and southern states. The result was a revival which altered the course of American history. |
Editors: Garth Rosell & Richard Dupuis
ISBN: 0310243351 |
In 1989, the first complete, restored text of revivalist Charles Finney’s memoirs was published by Zondervan. Until then, all editions had reflected editorial liberties introduced in the first 19th-century publication, edited after Finney’s death. The restored text—the culmination of over ten years of research by editors Garth Rosell and Richard Dupuis—brought to light Finney’s entire memoirs in their original language. Longstanding omissions and inaccuracies were corrected. Comprehensive annotations supplied detailed, phrase-by-phrase and even word-by-word explanations. |

Martin Luther
Author: James M. Kittleson
ISBN: 0800635973 |
Martin Luther (1483-1546), German theologian and Augustinian monk, demonised as the original heretic by some, others revering him as brother and co-apostle of Christ wrote 95 Theses (1517). Luther's teachings caused much division in the 16th century but they were also the catalyst inspiring reform and change for the Lutheran and Protestant traditions. The leader of the Reformation, he saw it not only as revolt against ecclesiastical abuses but a plea for the Pope to affirm the Gospel, wherein lay the doctrine of justification of faith by faith alone.
Engaging and authoritative, Kittleson’s important and popular biography is here represented with a new cover and new note from the author. His single-volume biography has become a standard resource for those who wish to delve into the depths of the Reformer without drowning in a sea of scholarly concerns. |

George Muller
Author: A. T. Pierson
ISBN: 1598562525 |
George Müller's life may be described as a primer on the miracle of answered prayer. |
When Müller felt called by God to care for orphans, he had only a few cents in his pocket. Without ever asking anyone other than God, he received over $7,200,000 dollars (in 1800's money) through prayer alone. Müller established Orphanages in Bristol, England, and founded the "Scriptural Knowledge Institution for Home and Abroad," the object of which was to aid Christian day-schools, to assist missionaries, and to circulate the Scriptures. His life was characterized by prayer, faith, and self-denial in the cause of Christ. During his lifetime, he established 117 schools which educated more than 120,000 young persons, including orphans. |

Chares Haddon Spurgeon
Author: Lewis Drummond
ISBN: 0825424720 |
Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-92) was England's best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1854, just four years after his conversion, Spurgeon, then only 20, became pastor of London's famed New Park Street Church (formerly pastored by the famous Baptist theologian John Gill). The congregation quickly outgrew their building, moved to Exeter Hall, then to Surrey Music Hall. In these venues Spurgeon frequently preached to audiences numbering more than 10,000—all in the days before electronic amplification. In 1861 the congregation moved permanently to the newly constructed Metropolitan Tabernacle. |

This definitive biography includes never-before-told stories and facts about this renowned British preacher. |
Spurgeon's printed works are voluminous, including his magnum opus, The Treasury of David. |

Hudson Taylor
Author: Howard & Geraldine Taylor
ISBN: 1598562533 |
James Hudson Taylor (1832-1905) was a Christian missionary to China, and founder of the China Inland Mission (renamed Overseas Missionary Fellowship). He served there for 51 years, bringing over 800 missionaries to the country and personally baptizing an estimated 50,000 converts. He was famous for his commitment to cultural sensitivity, wearing Chinese dress even though this was rare among missionaries of that time. China Inland Mission accepted working class volunteers, women, multinational recruits, and members of all Protestant denominations. |
| Hudson Taylor has been referred to as one of the most significant figures in the history of China in the 19th century, and the China Inland Mission was responsible for the widest Christian evangelistic campaign since the first century when Paul the Apostle brought Christian teaching to Europe. At Taylor's death in 1905, there were 205 stations with 849 missionaries and 125,000 Chinese Christians in the China Inland Mission. |
This is the classic biography of James Hudson Taylor by his son Howard and daughter-in-law Geraldine, who also served as missionaries to China. It is the inspiring story of Taylor's uncovering of the spiritual secret that paved the way for the China Inland Mission to become a reality. |

Corrie TenBoom
Author: Corrie TenBoom
ISBN: 1598563394 |
Corrie ten Boom (1892-1983) was a Dutch woman admired the world over for her courage, her forgiveness, and her memorable faith. In World War II, she and her family risked their lives to help Jews escape the Nazis by hiding them in their home in Haarlem, and their reward was a trip to Hitler's concentration camps. Corrie's father, sister, brother, and nephew died as a result of their imprison-ment. But she survived and was released—as a result of a clerical error—and now shares the story of how faith triumphs over evil. |
For thirty-five years Corrie's dramatic life story, full of timeless virtues, has prepared readers to face their own futures with faith, relying on God's love to overcome, heal, and restore. The Hiding Place tells the riveting story of how a middle-aged Dutch watchmaker became a heroine of the Resistance, a survivor of Hitler's death camps, and one of the most remarkable evangelists of the twentieth century. |
After the war, Corrie ten Boom returned to the Netherlands to set up rehabilitation centers. She returned to Germany in 1946, and many years of itinerant teaching in over sixty countries followed, during which time she wrote many books. In 1967, Corrie ten Boom was honored as one of the "Righteous Among the Nations" by the State of Israel. The Hiding Place (1971) was made into a film in 1975. |

John Wesley
Author: John Wesley
ISBN: 1598563009 |
Spanning some fifty-five years, John Wesley's journals recorded his daily experiences in studying, teaching, preaching, and traveling the throughout England and then America in the eighteenth century. These selections present an engrossing portrait of Wesley during the course of his travels and evangelistic activities, illuminating the preacher's views and opinions on a host of contemporary matters. |
Begun as a public vindication of his early spiritual and pastoral work in Oxford and America, Wesley's journal became a means of keeping far-flung outposts of Methodism in touch with one another, a device for administering encouragement and rebukes, and a textbook of the experiential religion Wesley spent his life proclaiming. Wesley's eclectic interests and passion for rational analysis also make his journal a rich source for any reader interested in observing the conditions and values of society--particularly those of the lower classes—through the eyes of a well-educated and intelligent gentleman of the time. |

With Christ In The School Of Disciple Building
Author: Carl Wilson
ISBN: 76-13214 (Zondervan, 1976) |
Evangelism, to be effective, must be part of a discipling process in which as many church members as possible are involved. The author sets forth the biblical basis of the chronological steps for developing a disciple from involvement with his teacher until he is sent out on his own. Using Christ's method of disciple building as a pattern, Dr. Wilson shows how a pastor (or leader) can, in a seven-step program, build a team of disciple builders so that evangelism and spiritual growth will continue together in the life of a healthy church. |
The methods set forth in this book have been tried out in the local church setting and have been found to be highly effective. The chapters that cover the seven steps of disciple building are:
•Repentance and Faith
•Enlightenment and Guidance
•Ministry Training and Appreciation of Benefits
•Leadership Developmen and Government Under God
•Reevaluation and Separation
•Participation and Delegation
•The Exchanged Life and Worldwide Challenge |

People want a true, straight-talking, plain-speaking, “don't tell me what you think I want to hear, tell me what I need to hear," biblically accurate interpretation and exposition of God’s Word. They want to know what God wants us to know, the "way" He wants us to know it. |
And people have grown weary of being "hit up" for money, or given “fluff” in place of doctrine, or having their intelligence "insulted" or "placated" in the name of Christianity. The result has been a genuine longing for the preaching and teaching that the Spurgeons and Wesleys and Edwards’ of yesteryear were renowned for. |
“WORD PICTURES” is one ministry’s God-fearing attempt to be faithful to that call. That’s why every single program in this series is meant to be an integral part of every Christian’s spiritual “diet.” This isn’t “buffet style Christianity” where we pick what we like, and ignore the rest. No, each and every one of these programs is designed to be "one major piece of the puzzle of christian life." And every program is produced with high-end visuals and contemporary illustrations that bring the Bible to life before the viewer’s eyes. These videos are available for viewing on TV or purchase. |
